Here's a rough from the new job I've just started for East Sussex Archaeology and Museums Partnership, who are making an exhibition for the gatehouse of an old priory, which is now a museum. I'll be producing illustrations of medieval life and industry; largely by re-imagining existing illuminations and engravings in a consistent period and style.
The above one is a couple of guys working on some timber framing with a twibill (which seems to be some kind of double headed adze/chisel) and a spoon auger. I really like those old illuminations and how gestural they are so I maybe went a bit overboard and made the carpenters look like they are disco dancing with the tools, I've been asked to bring it back to be a little more similar to the original (which shows the guy on the right bearing down on the auger).
Nice man, was about to say that I like how much similar it is to medieval manuscripts. I think the medieval figural work had some really original ideas, nice to see you incorporate them. Look forward to seeing this develop. Oh and congratz on the museum commission! Make sure to take pics of it in the museum for all to see!
ReplyDeleteCongrats on the commission man. They really are like a medieval drawing, the only ones Id be familiar with are the old sword fighting manuals but they reminded me of them straight away, but now that you said about them dancing that's all I can see :)
ReplyDeleteNice work, they do have the appearance of characters from old manuscripts. It's always so difficult to draw work that reflects another age as the thinking behind the original drawings is so culturally different. You did a great job, the museum should be well pleased.
